Hello there! My name is Mary Schmit, and I am honored to say that I have been teaching at Komarek since 2007! I started my career in 2002, so I have a few years of experience, all of which have been spent working with 6-8 grade students in Reading and Language Arts. I even taught a section of Social Studies one year!
I attended Willowbrook High School in Villa Park, IL, before heading off to Augustana College in the Quad Cities. I majored in Elementary Education and minored in Psychology. Because I had both academic and music scholarships, I spent much of my non-studying time in the music building. I was able to sing in Augie's top choral ensemble's which toured the US and Sweden. I sang everything from classical choral works, to opera, to jazz. Music is still very important in my life.
I have a Masters in Education from St. Xavier University, and took classes through the Illinois Resource Center to become endorsed in English as a Second Language. Those credits are through National Louis. I guess I love classes because I even took a science class at Brookfield Zoo!
In my spare time, I enjoy reading, singing and am actively involved at my church. I am passionate about homeless outreach and working with different charitable organizations. I love spending time with my niece and nephews. They actually CRY when I don't give them books for Christmas and/or birthdays! Because I grew up with three brothers, it was a given that I like sports, so I can definitely hold my own in a conversation about football, baseball (Cubbies!), hockey, and basketball.
I look forward to having a successful year with my students. (As the kids in my homeroom pointed out, we are 6S!) Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
Ms Mary Schmit
